Shampoo your hair with a good brad of shampoo. . You could mix the yoke of an egg in a little bit of ordinary shampoo in a cup and get a richer shampoo. This will soften the hair and provide a lot of nutrition to the scalp. For too long a period do not use a very strong shampoo which promises extra cleaning or has antiseptic properties—this could give you a dry scalp and rough hair.
When washing, rub the shampoo well on the scalp with your fingertips, and wash it well with plenty of water. Dab-dry your hair first with the towel, and when the hair are half -dry, comb them and apply a setting lotion, if desired. Then set them in position with the help of clips or rollers, as the case may be. Then use a hair dryer for the purpose of drying. If you want a good finish to your hair, try beer as a setting lotion. It is very good for the hair and gives it a bit of body, which is required for the style to last longer.
Make sure that the preparations used on the hair are not highly perfumed. Hair-spray has become a necessity, as one would like to keep the hair tidy for a well-groomed look. Short hair has this problem, whereas long hair does not get out of place so soon. Too much use of hair-spray is not good, as it gives you brittle and dry hair. Make it a habit to brush off stale hair-spray regularly, each night. Good brushing at night will always remove hair-spray used previously, so that the hair can look glossy again for the next day. Hair tends to pick up a lot of fluff from the atmosphere, which make them stick together and lose their natural sheen. So brush your hair at night. This not only cleans your hair, but also stimulates the circulation of the scalp in a gentle way, which in turn promotes the healthy growth of your hair.
Every day, some hair is lost till new ones replace the old, which fall off. However, one could be close to getting scanty hair, which is quite an alarming condition to be in. So good growth is essential to balance the natural loss of hair. Vitamin B complex and Vitamins A and D are a great help in keeping your hair in the proper condition desired. Good hair is an indication of good health.
In normal conditions all is well with the hair, but for some occasional problems mentioned below.
Oily Dandruff; this is a very common sight and can be prevalent at any time of the year. In could be the result of an oily or a dry scalp. If this dandruff is caused by over- oiliness then shampoo your hair twice a week with warmish water, adding two teaspoonful’s of Listerine to the amount of shampoo you use. Before shampooing, apply diluted Listerine to the scalp, and not just on the hair, but on the scalp, as the dandruff starts from the scalp. Make small partings all along the scalp and dip a swab-stick in the diluted Listerine (one teaspoon of Listerine plus one teaspoon of water.) Leave it on for half an hour and shampoo it off with hot water. Do not use any oil for messaging the scalp. It is preferable not to have a scalp massage at all.
Dry Dandruff; The scalp sometimes gets dry due to dry weather conditions or otherwise, and can lead small, flaky dandruff close to the scalp. On brushing it falls on the clothes, neck and back. Sometimes it persistent in nature. Listerine is very effective if used before the shampoo, as mentioned above, and if shampooed into the hair once a week (with one teaspoon of Listerine) .Once a fortnight, apply hot olive-oil and massage well into the scalp. After massaging, use a wet towel squeezed out of hot water to cover your hair and scalp with, and leave on for 15 minutes. If possible, leave the oil on overnight; otherwise, just shampoo it off. The scalp needs nourishment, so make sure the oil reaches the scalp and not just the hair. Massaging stimulates the circulation and makes the lazy oil glands active, and therefore helps the skin of the scalp to remain lubricated and not gets dry.
Dry Hair; normally, a dry scalp leads to dry hair, but sometimes because of a change in the climate, a change in the hair preparations or in the use of a very strong shampoo or hairspray, the hair turns dry. Very often, hair dyes leave the hair dry if hair conditioners are not used. Sometimes after a fever or a cold your hair may look dull and dry, but it soon returns to normalcy when you are up and about.
Massage your scalp with warm olive-oil and wrap a hot, wet towel round your hair for ten minutes. The shampoo your hair in the normal way, after whipping the yoke of and egg into the amount of shampoo you are going to use. Avoid using hair spray for some time; drink a lot of milk and try to eat more fish, eggs and butter every day. Brush your hair very carefully, as dry hair tend to turn brittle.
Falling Hair; it has to be seen if this is periodical or a seasonal phenomenon. If so, there is nothing to worry. In the natural course, a new hair rep0laces the old, but falling hair would be a matter of concern only if it were connected with certain health problems or emotional disturbances. Consult a doctor and, in the meantime, add milk, eggs, fish and Vitamin B complex to your diet. Be as gentle as you can with your hair, be it massaging, shampooing, combing or setting. Follow the routine as explained under general hair care.
Brittle Hair with Split Ends; with dry weather, one usually experiences this kind of hair. Split ends do not let the hair grow in the normal way. One could cut off these ends by rolling small strands of hair. You will find that the split ends stand out, which makes the cutting easier. One can have singeing done from and experienced hairdresser. Follow the hair care treatment suggested for a dry scalp.
Premature Greying: Sometimes, a wrong diet, a deficiency of Vitamin B complex, and emotional upset, or sometimes even the usage of highly perfumed preparations on the hair could be responsible for this condition. Give the hair the care suggested earlier for normal hair. One could use the hair rinse to cover the grey hair, as at a young age one may not like to look grey. Hair dyes should be used with discretion, and as last resort. Consider the point that for the rest of your life you will have to carry on with hair dyes; so be extra careful, as hair dyes could give you a dry and scanty growth. However, if rinses are not effective, then the hair dye has to be used, which you should not attempt yourself. Before the very first application of a hair dye, it will be your advantage that you have a sensitivity test performed before you can safely use it. You should trust the job to an experienced hairdresser for the first time. Hair rinses, however, do not require any such test. Nestles hair, colour rinse is quite good. Select the colour suitable to your hair, as the rinse comes in various shades. There is no dearth of hair dyes of a very good quality in the market. Ask your hairdresser to suggest the right shade and the make for you.
Bald Patches; this could be the result of some infection or again an emotional factor that has an important role to play. If it is infection, then a doctor alone can diagnose it. So leave it to him and closely follow the treatment suggested. Although it may look very alarming, it gets alright in due course of time.
Lanky Hair; if you have been dieting and exposing your hair to a lot of sunshine and dry winds, your hair can become lanky. Check on these points and follow the procedure mentioned above for dry hair. Wear a straight hair style so that now and then you can brush your hair in place without the help of hair spray or setting lotion.
Rough Hair; usually, thick hair are coarse. One has to know how best one can manage this hair. Regular brushing and the use of large rollers for setting it into the style you want, will give you the best results. Follow the general hair care suggested in the beginning of this chapter.
HAIR STYLNG
No matter what type of hair you have – straight, curly, wavy, black, brown, grey, and oily or dry- it requires the same care. You have to follow a definite routine in looking after your hair properly, to get the best results while wearing an attractive hair style. Regularity in washing, oil massages, and brushing every night keeps the hair sort, lustrous and healthy.
Don’t be tempted to retain the hair you had set at the hairdresser’s for more than two days, by not brushing it through and, instead, applying still more lacquer to make it stay in place. You will notice that this will make your hair look like a wig. Stiff styles are out of fashion, so brush you hair nicely and style it again, so that it looks soft and natural.
HOW TO SELECT A HAIR STYLE
Some of you know what exactly suits you and some leave it to the hairdressers. Other has no idea about what will suit them. Hair is styled essentially according to the shape of the face.
How to know What Shape you have; Brush your hair away from the face and keep it there for a while with a hair band or a ribbon to expose your true hair line. Now stand close to the mirror and take your old lipstick, which you can afford to waste, and draw a line along the outline of your face on the mirror. The shape you will get can be classified in one of six shapes given below.
Round: – For this face the style should be higher and narrower on the sides Hair piled on the top of the head is also suitable.
Inverted Triangle; This face can be made to appear less bony by adding a little height to the style, and also covering the temples. It should be broad and away from the sides down to the chin, so that attention is drawn away from the pointed chin. Short hair would be a better choice.
Triangle; Set the hair high and wide on the sides up the ears, and narrow it along the jaw line, covering it. A long hair-style is better suited to this face.
Oval; this is a perfect shape and can carry any style to advantage.
Diamond; Comb the hair higher and wider towards the temples, the covering the neck; the hair-style should then get narrow and away from the chin. Short and long styles can be worn.
Long; the style on this face should not be very high on top, but wide on the sides. A short hair-do would look quite good.
